Editorial profile & readership
Landwards provides technical, market-orientated news and
reviews of innovative developments in engineering and technology for practical
application in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Environment and Amenity.
The readership has a considerable degree of influence in the design, selection
and use of equipment and infrastructure for the land-based industries,
both in the UK and internationally. The readers’ expertise covers
a broad technical and administrative spectrum in manufacturing and processing,
machinery dealerships and contracting, agri-business and forestry estate
management, government procurement, engineering research, design and development,
education and training, consultancy, conservation and amenity.
Landwards is published six times a year – in
February, April, June, August, October and December - by the Institution
of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE), the professional body for around
2000 engineers, scientists, technologists and others in the land-based sector.
The journal is distributed free to all members and on subscription to both
individuals and to a substantial number of libraries at agricultural training
and research centres worldwide.
Types of material
A wide range of material is acceptable - for example, reports of original
research or experimentation, conference papers, articles dealing with practical
problems and their solutions or with comparative specifications, product
trials, and case studies.
Style
Authors should follow the layout and style of recent issues of the Journal.
The optimum length of text is 1500-2000 words but longer articles may be
appropriate on some subjects and will be considered. Shorter articles or
items of news and comment are also relevant. Some illustrations - figures
and tables and two or three photographs are desirable. The name and affiliation
of the author should be given on a preliminary page or at the end of the
text. Authors’ photographs (good quality, head and shoulders) are
requested. An introduction and summary along with sub-headings in the text
are helpful but not essential - such elements are generally prepared at
the editing stage.
Illustrations
Photographs should be supplied as glossy prints - black and white
preferably. Colour can be used where good contrasts permit black and white
printing. (Note also that a good colour photograph may sometimes be suitable
for the front cover illustration). Figures, graphs and diagrams should be on
good quality paper. The figure number and the top of the photograph (if not
explicit) should be indicated on the back of each. The caption should be provided
on a separate page. In addition to the hard copy, graphics on diskette as TIF
or as JPEG files are acceptable at a minimum resolution of 225 dpi.
Text and references
Text should be typed or printed with double line spacing. References
in the text should be given as the name of the author followed by the year
of publication. The Reference List should be in alphabetical order. All units
should conform to the SI system. In addition to hard copy, it would help
enormously to receive all text on 3.5" floppy disc as a MS Word file
or a RTF file.
Refereed papers
Scientific papers may be given the opportunity of being refereed before
publication if the author so requests and the paper contains a record of original
work or presents an original commentary not previously published elsewhere.
On publication, the paper will be listed as a refereed paper. Preference is
given to technical articles of interest to a wide professional readership and
authors of research papers are encouraged to submit their manuscripts to suitable
peer reviewed journals.
Copyright
Submission of a paper for publication implies the transfer of copyright
from the author to the Institution of Agricultural Engineers.
