Agricultural Engineers face up to the challenges of the 'Perfect Storm'

Agricultural engineers recently came together to debate the serious challenges we all face to meet and feed a future potential 50 per cent increase in population.  Sir John Beddington, the Government's chief scientist who commissioned the Foresight Report has estimated the world has 20 years to deliver something in the order of 40 per cent more food, 30 per cent more fresh water and fifty per cent more energy.

Andy Newbold appointed new President of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers

Andy Newbold, managing director of technical events company, Fusion Events, is the new President of IAgrE.  A member of the organisation since 1993 and a Chartered Engineer, Andy also runs NEWMAC Ltd, an engineering risk management consultancy business and publishes Pro Operator, the specialist technical magazine for all NRoSO registered sprayer operators.

For a generation agriculture appeared to move from crisis to crisis.  It was undervalued and given little recognition for the role it played.  At one point it was even suggested that we could rely on imported food rather than invest in a domestic food producing capability.

Coleg Sir Gar students pick up IAgrE awards at LAMMA

Two students from Coleg Sir Gar's agricultural campus at Gelli Aur Coleg have carried off IAgrE's student and safety awards, presented at LAMMA.

First introduced last year, the safety award is presented to a student whose project is aimed at improving a machine or process and has demonstrated a sound approach to health and safety.  This year's award went to Gareth Hamer for his excellent project developing a power assisted sheep turnover crate.

Far Moor Bridge, Selside, Yorkshire has won a Judges Special Award in the 2011 British Construction Awards under the ‘Small Civil Engineering Project – up to £3m category’. Commissioned by Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, the innovative design is probably the largest example of a stress laminated arch bridge in the world and has been designed specifically for walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers.

IAgrE Member Dan Massey named 2011 Technician of the year

Dan Massey of John Deere Dealer J E Buckle Ltd of Cromer, Stevenage, has been named 2011 Technician of the Year at trade magazine Service Dealers’ annual Industry Award Dinner.

Dan, an LTA 4 lead service technician is also one of the first John Deere Master Technicians in the country and is a Council member of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers.

IAgrE present a trio of awards at LAMMA - Jan 2011 

This year the Institution of Agricultural Engineers presented three awards at LAMMA 2011. 

LAMMA was the platform for the Institution to launch its new annual Safety Award.  Promoting the importance of safety issues, the award has been established to encourage and recognise innovation in safe design or operation of equipment or processes by students studying agricultural engineering or subjects related to the application of engineering and technology to the land based sector.
