Agricultural Engineering Institution (IAgrE) maintains professional status
The Engineering Council (EC) and the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) have renewed IAgrE’s professional licences for a further 5 years. To qualify for renewal IAgrE was re-assessed by the EC and SocEnv to ensure continuing compliance and that the correct procedures are in place to continually monitor the professional development and conduct of registrants. Skills shortages in the UK continue to increase
The Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE) endorses research carried out by the Confederation of British Industry and the EDI (the vocational qualifications body) that has revealed over 350 organisations are struggling to find staff with skills in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), while even more companies expect to experience staff skill shortages in the next three years. Andy Newbold is appointed President Elect of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE)
Andy Newbold has been appointed President Elect of IAgrE. A member of IAgrE since 1993, he is a Chartered Engineer and is managing director of technical events company, Fusion Events, where he runs a portfolio of shows and exhibitions. Andy also runs NEWMAC Safety, and publishes the technical magazine, Pro Operator. Click for more information

The Institution of Agricultural Engineers’ (IAgrE) campaign to increase student membership, which began in 2001, has recruited over 2400 students with just over ten per cent retaining membership once they have completed their studies – for most other institutions it is an average of three per cent. University Students Demonstrate Landbased Engineering is a Cool Career Choice
A student group at Harper Adam University College in Shropshire has produced a DVD aimed at inspiring 14 to 16 year olds to choose landbased engineering as a career. Called ‘Landbased engineering is it your field?’ the DVD was part of a careers project created in partnership with Career Track and supported by IAgrE, BAGMA and major manufacturers and machinery dealers from the land based industry sector. IAgrE asserts that the Royal Society has ignored the key role engineering and science play in food crop production
The Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE) considers a report issued by the Royal Society seriously overlooks the key role engineering and technology plays in translating science into action. The report entitled Reaping the benefits: Science and sustainable intensification of global agriculture was carried out by a working group chaired by Sir David Balcombe FRS and claims to be a landmark in the examination of the contribution of the biological sciences to food crop production. West Midlands branch inspired by visit to environmentally efficient Jaguar Land Rover Training Academy
Members from the IAgrE West Midlands branch were fascinated recently on a visit to the new Jaguar Land Rover Training Academy to learn how an old book warehouse, which had stood empty for several years, was transformed into a low cost energy, state-of-the-art technical training facility. Forestry Commission honoured by British Construction Industry Awards
The Lewisburn Bridge, in Kielder Water and Forest Park, Northumberland has won honours for the Forestry Commission in the 2009 British Construction Industry Awards. The curved suspension bridge, built for the Kielder Partnership was designed by Dr Geoff Freedman, the Forestry Commission’s head of civil engineering and design. Click for more information
